Royal Doulton

"The story of Doulton dates back to 1815 when John Doulton acquired an interest is a small pottery in Vauxhall Walk, Lambeth, London. Each subsequent decade has been marked by continuous growth and development, firstly in the field of sanitary and chemical stoneware, then ceramic insulators and terra cotta, and finally decorated ware and statuary.

It was in 1877 that Doultons decided to extend their interest in decorated pottery to fine bone china and earthenware. They acquired an old established pottery at Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, and a distinguished staff of designers, modellers and artists were gathered together. Through their pioneering activities they opened up one new field of ceramic enterprise after another.

In order to meet the overwhelming demand for their products fromall world markets, the Burslem factory has been, and is still being developed. Here the famous Royal Doulton figurines are manufactured in addition to character jugs, nursery ware, fancy lines and bone china, and fine earthenware tableware.

There are Doulton factories now at Burslem, Stoke, Tamworth and Dudley (all in Staffordshire); at Erith, Kent; and Lambeth; while at Hamworthy, in Dorset, are situated the Doulton china clay fields."
