Thomas Dean (& Sons) (Ltd)

Location and period of operation:

Thomas Dean

Tunstall

1880

1952

Earthenware manufacturer at the Black Works, Tunstall, Stoke-on-Trent, England.
  • Established at the Black Works, High Street Tunstall by Thomas Dean and his two sons G. A. Dean and J. E. Dean.

  • NOTE: Geoffrey Godden (Encyclopedia of British Pottery and Porcelain Marks) gives a date of 1789 for the establishment of this business. However the letterhead and price list shown below clearly give a date of 1880. This could be a typo or it could be that an relative of the Dean family was in operation from the earlier date.

  • In 1934 the business was incorporated as a Limited company.

  • From 1947 to 1952 the business operated under the Ridgway & Adderley holding company, the name Thomas Dean & Sons Ltd. was retained. The works were renamed the Teapot Works.
