  Known facts:

Hanley, Fenton, & Longton all in Stoke upon Trent conurbation. Boundaries blurred.
Some records say Fenton, and others say Hanley, and some say S-u-T (Stoke-upon-Trent)

Pre 1837 records are Church not Government records.

Found out why he was “John Samuel”. His parents had another child christened Samuel on 24th March 1834 who obviously didn’t survive. (Twin to Priscilla?) They wanted the Samuel name to continue, hence this one. Both christened at Methodist New Connexion, Longton circuit.

After his birth, he rarely used the “John” except for the 1861 & 1881 censuses. He even called himself Samuel on Son Samuel’s marriage certificate. Family names, ages etc keep continuity.

1880:             Samuel 1859 married Sarah Ann(ie)Lloyd. Samuel 1835 on marriage certificate as

“Butcher”. Ties above records to Samuel 1859.

Sarah Ann Lloyd was born in Kingswinford. Died Dudley 9/8/1900. (Min 10 kids)

  Census details:

1851 census: At home, called Samuel, unmarried. Farmhand. See Samuel Birks 1798.

                      Priscilla Wilson is a “visitor”.

1861 census: 204, James Sq. Hanley, Stoke upon Trent. Ancestry.com transcribe name as “Berks”.

John Samuel Birks is a “Butcher”.

Boarder John Baggaley. Relative of his Mother.

See 1861 census for “Birks relatives” showing Birks living next door to Bagguley in Wybunbury.

1871 census: 280, Maubcroft(?) Shelton, Hanley, Staff’s. Ancestry.com transcribe as “Bocks”.

Samuel is still a “Butcher”.  (Again the “John” is dropped).

1881 census: 41, High Rd, Kingswinford, Staff’s. Samuel is a “Hay Trusser”. Suspect erroneous.

Samuel Birks 1859 at 4, Foster St, Kingswinford. See own record.

Priscilla Wilson  -  John Samuel's wife

Born:

11/12/1833

Longton, Stafford. Christened 4th May1834.

Occupation:

Married:

15/6/1856

John Samuel Birks 1859.

Died:

Sep 1889

Staffordshire Worcestershire GRO. 6C 66.

Father:

Samuel Wilson.    On Pricilla's christening record.

Mother:

Margaret Roberts. On Pricilla's christening record.

   Known facts:

She appears on the 1851 census as a “Visitor” on the Birks farm, Fenton Park House. This ties up the marriage record of Priscilla Wilson marrying Samuel Birks.

Her christening record calls her Pricila Wilson, but illiteracy produces different spellings every time. They often miss the “S”, or miss an “L”. The spelling in the heading has been decided on for continuity as it is used most.

Believe her mothers name is a misspelled “Margaret”.
