Housing in Stoke-on-Trent

House Styles

To obtain some idea as to the architecture and basic layout of houses in the late nineteenth century, a sketch plan was drawn of one property in Ashford Street (Shelton) and sketch plans of four others were obtained from the Potteries Museum and Art Gallery.

The ones obtained from Potteries Museum and Art Gallery were produced by the Stoke-on-Trent Historic Building Survey. As a part of this survey, brief details of all the housing in the Potteries built before 1914 and still standing were recorded, and detailed plans were made of over 100 buildings.

Photographs were taken of some of the houses and are included with this text.
