My main area of interest is in the history and sociology of Stoke-on-Trent, so if you have photos of places, people, factories and so on then I am very interested in receiveing them.

You are very welcome to send photos of marks and I will try to identify them if I can (please note that I cannot give valuations) - the following notes will help you (and me!)

1) The 'backstamp' - (the mark or lettering underneath the pottery) is more important in identification than the pottery itself - so always include the picture of this. I may be able to help to identify the factory / maker but can't help with patterns, shapes or valuations.

2) For the sake of your own phone bill or time try not to send 'bitmap' pictures (those with a .bmp or .tiff extension) - they are always large files - use the .jpg format if you can.

3) The pictures should preferably be less than 1Meg in size but should be big enough to see properly, especially if it is a place, people or buildings. If the photo is of pottery then please email the backstamp -  Only send one photo of the ware - I do not need to see it from all directions.

4) The programme you are using for scanning or manipulating the photo should let you 'crop' the picture - so if you can, only send the picture of the pottery or the backstamp - I don't need to see your table-top and I only need the mark (not the whole of the bottom of the ware).

5) If your programme lets you select various options then the following are the best (don't worry if you can't so this):

a) Format: .jpg (40% compression)
b) Size: crop to around 550-650 pixels wide.

6) If you don't know what to do with the scanner or digital camera then - read the instructions!! (there are many different kinds and I don't have the expertise to help with this) - basically scan or photo the item, save the picture on your hard disk and then attach it to the email - simple!! (ask a friend if you are stuck).

7) My area of interest is only in the North Staffordshire Potteries - so I'm sorry - I don't have any expertise in any other ware or companies.

...good luck!!
