On the 1898 OS map Club Street was named 'Commercial Street', hence the name of the public house. At the end of Commercial Street was the Newcastle-under-Lyme branch canal which flowed through Minton's works further along London Road towards Stoke centre.

Penkhull New Road leads to the hill top village of Penkhull.
