Mr. Harold Hubble, was the Sacristan and, amongst other duties, attended to the stock of candles, communion wafers and wine. Mrs. Hubble and her daughter looked after the laundering of the Altar linen and purificators.
The altar at St. James had removable panels covered with various colurs of heavy cloth which had to be changed in accordance with the various times of the Christian calendar Harold's grandson recalls crawling inside to change these on a Saturday afternoon while his grandad cleaned the candle holders and attended to his other duties in preparation for the Sunday services.
