about the "Made in England Mosaic" project

The Made in England Mosaic is a celebration of the pottery and ceramics which have been made in Stoke-on-Trent, England for 100's of years.

The City known as the Potteries represents ultimate in the craft of the potter - from mass production of everyday table ware to the artisan producing elegant and intricate china of the highest quality.

There have been over 1,500 potters in Stoke-on-Trent and most of them used a back-stamp to identify their ware, often bearing the words 'ENGLAND' or 'MADE IN ENGLAND'.
Each back-stamp is a story - a story of the company (which may have lasted for 2 years or 100's of years), the smoking - fire belching bottle kilns, the child labour and sometimes appalling working conditions. It is also a story of beauty, workmanship, improvement and camaraderie.

......this mosaic tells this story in a unique way

diversity and unity
The mosaic will show both the diversity and the unity of The Potteries, reflecting the fact that it is made up of the potworks of the six towns but is one city.
In a similar way the City of Stoke-on-Trent Arms contains elements from each of the six towns arms and has as its motto Vis unita fortior  ‘United Strength is Stronger’
