'HAWARDEN' Built by W.G.Bagnall of Stafford.

Harwarden

The last steam loco to work at Shelton bar. The locomotives name is Hawarden and was built by Bagnalls at Stafford in the 1950's .

It can now be found at Foxfield Railway. The photo was taken about March 1995 when Hawarden and one other steam loco returned to Shelton so that a group of steam engine enthusiasts who are pro photographers could photograph steam locos working on home ground, hauling trains of steel around the steel works.
The event was such a success that it was repeated a further two occasions.

'HAWARDEN' Built by W.G.Bagnall of Stafford.

Built in 1940, works no 2623, for the Shelton Iron and Steel Co Ltd, Stoke-on-Trent. The engine was used on some of the most arduous work, hauling molten metal ladles and slag ladles to the tip at Shelton Bar, as the works was known locally.

It was the last steam locomotive to work there finally succumbing to the march of the diesel in 1972. 'Hawarden' was purchased from the British Steel Corporation and, moving to Foxfield in March 1972, has continued to put in reliable performances since then, stopping only for major overhauls in the mid 80's and 90's.

'Hawarden has a 180lb per square inch boiler and 15 by 22 inch cylinders, 3'6" diameter wheels and a 5'6" wheelbase.
