Castlefield Street, Shelton, Stoke-on-Trent
(was Edward Street)

Castlefield Street runs off Shelton Old Road. This street was renamed in the early 1950's. It used to be Edward Street and Shelton Old Road used to be Newcastle Road.

A descriptive account of The Potteries (illustrated) 1893 advertising and trade journal. Page 28 shows "Messrs. Thomas Shore and Sons, Engineers and Iron Founders" in Edward Street, Newcastle Road, Shelton, Hanley

Shore produced pottery making equipment - especially 'pug-mills' The journal entry tells us that the works "back onto the canal" - the 1890 map shows a works in this location marked as "Boiler Works"
on the journal entry

| 1890 map of the area |

Edward Street is at the top right of the map. A "Castlefield Pottery" can be seen nearby. A few years later on the 1898 OS map these works are named "Etruscan Tile Works". The "Castlefield Pottery" must be why Edward Street was renamed Castlefield Street.
