England players

Three Stoke City players were in the England team which lost 3-1 to Scotland at Hampden park in 1937. The players were Stanley Matthews, Fred Steele and Joe Johnson.
Fred Steele scored England's only goal.

Port Vale

In 1951, the Port Vale player-manager, Ivor Powell, was sacked after only four months with the club.

Vale v Stoke

Tim Coleman's second-minute goal for Stoke City against Port Vale on October 10th 1956, was the first scored at the Victoria Ground under floodlights. 

Stoke City

Stoke City's winning goal against Notts County in 1979, which guaranteed promotion promotion to what was then the First Division, was scored by Paul Richardson.
