The name Glebe School gives the hint that this land once belonged to the church and provided income (as part of rent or a tithe) to the church minister. (known as 'Glebe land')

The existence of Glebe land is also shown by the old 'Glebe Colliery' (now reclaimed and known as 'Glebedale Park') the road from City Road to Heron Cross was renamed from Station Road to Glebedale Road in the early 1950's.
