Newstead, near Hem Heath between Longton and Trentham in the southern part of Stoke-on-Trent, developed from a largely rural landscape of fields and scattered dwellings into a mixed residential and light industrial area during the 19th and 20th centuries.
The area gradually expanded as the Potteries grew, with new housing and the development of nearby industrial estates alongside local roads extending into what was once open countryside.
This page lists the present and historic streets of Newstead and links to descriptions of the origins of street names, old maps, local developments, and the changing character of the district over time. From former field boundaries and rural lanes to later residential streets and nearby industrial estate development, the streets of Newstead reflect the southern expansion of Stoke-on-Trent.
Today, Newstead is mainly residential in character, with its street layout still reflecting traces of its earlier rural landscape alongside the influence of nearby employment areas within the wider Potteries.
