Cauldon Place Bridge and Lock No. 3

  • Bridge No. 4 and Lock No. 3 on the Caldon Canal.

  • The bridge carries the Caldon Canal underneath Stoke Road - which leads from Howard Place, Shelton to Stoke.

  • Cauldon Place Bridge is named after Cauldon Place.

  • Although similar in name the Caldon Canal does not get its name from Cauldon Place (or vice-versa).

  • The Cauldon Place pottery works was built by Job Ridgway around 1802.

  • The works were taken and developed by Brown-Westhead, Moore & Co.

  • Later the Cauldon College was built on the site of the pottery.

  • Originally the pottery works was level with the canal, subsidence was caused by mining works resulted in the difference in levels.

"The factory is on the main road from Stoke in the direction of Shelton, the works extending in a rearward direction towards the New Hanley Park."

"Much of the raw material used is conveyed by means of the canal which is in immediate proximity to the works, the chief ingredients comprising ball or blue clay, China clay, flints, and (for the best classes of porcelain) ox bones, largely derived from the South American markets. At the principal works a staff numbering about one thousand four hundred hands finds constant employment, a number of workers hardly exceeded, we believe, by any earthenware manufactory in the Potteries."
