Short Street off Uttoxeter Road, Longton

Just up from Gladstone Pottery (which is now a museum - well worth a visit) walking along Uttoxeter Road towards Normacot is Short Street. Short Street is amazing for its lack of change for many years.

The cottages (nos 23-27 Short St.) are grade II listed buildings (heritage no. 83B)

Of note:

The two old street lamps which are the original gas lamps.

The cobble stone streets.

The frame on the right hand side which has pulleys top and bottom - probably for loading ware onto the carts.

These cottages were used in the BBC television adaptation of Arnold Bennett's book 'Clayhanger'.

This chimney (much thinner than a bottle kiln) is a flint kiln. This chimney (much thinner than a bottle kiln) is a flint kiln.

The chimney is just behind the gardens (bottom of the picture) of the cottages.

The flint shop and kiln worked 24 hours a day.

Note the characteristic steel bands around the chimney.
