	Caldon Canal

Caldon canal runs from the Trent and Mersey
canal at Etruria all through the industrial Potteries and onto the mills at
Caldon Low.  The canal crosses Stoke Road at Howard Place.

In the distance are some of the college
buildings. The pottery works were built on this site to make use of the
canal to transport ware to Liverpool and Hull for export. To the left are
canal side flats being newly built.

Originally the canal and works were on the same level.
The OS maps show gates in the wall also there were no locks needed
at this part of the canal.
Over the years subsidence has caused a change in ground levels so
the college is some 10 foot (3 meters) below the canal this lock
had to be introduced in the canal.
