Gem Pottery Ltd

Location and period of operation:

Gem Pottery (Ltd)

Tunstall

?

August 1993

Originally a wholesale dealer and later a decorator (manufacturer?) in Tunstall, Stoke-on-Trent, England.
  • The start date of the business is uncertain. the partners were George Halfpenny and William Peake. It is recorded that they were in business as Gem Pottery, Wholesale Dealers in Pottery at the High Street, Tunstall.

  • It is believed that Gem pottery acquired the moulds and patterns of William Hulme after that company closed in 1954.

  • In September 1959 William Peake retired from the business which was continued by George Halfpenny.

  • The business was incorporated as a limited company on the 1st March 1960.

  • Godden (Encyclopaedia of British Pottery & Porcelain Marks) records that from 1961 the business was producing earthenware at Keele Street, Tunstall and also that they were wholesalers for Alfred Meakin (Tunstall) Ltd.

  • Gem Pottery decorated white-ware blanks brought in from local manufacturers. It is uncertain if Gem Pottery actually manufactured ware themselves.

  • In March 1992 three members of the Cooper family together with Arthur Gratton and Reginald Hoon were appointed directors of Gem Pottery Ltd.

  • At a meeting in August 1993 it was decided that as the company cannot meet its liabilities it would be voluntarily wound up. The business of the company was recorded as "Pottery Manufacturers"
